Otago Red Stag Trails 4×4 adventure
Retracing the golden years of Otago red stag hunting.
A new opportunity from Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris, 4x4ing into the mountains and back in time. With professional guide Chris McCarthy and Professional Photographer Steve Couper. This is an epic photographic Adventure.

HISTORICAL, 4×4 ADVENTURE TO THE HALCYON DAYS OF OTAGO RED STAG HUNTING.
This is an incredible opportunity to explore and experience some of the traditional valleys, mountains, lakes, rivers and hunting grounds where the Otago red stags first began to earn their fame. Observe these wild deer in their natural environment, camp out in back country huts and traditional tent camps and leave your footprints where New Zealand hunting legends left theirs, in the halcyon days of Otago red stag hunting 100 years before.
Spend your first evening of this adventure in Lake Hawea Hunting Safaris exclusive, private hunting area, within the traditional range of the Otago herd, glassing and observing wild Otago red deer, including stags. It may be possible to stalk and hunt deer. Visit the liberation point of the Otago herd 1871, visit other prime, picturesque locations around the Lake Hawea region, staying in backcountry cabins and traditional style tent camps, with vehicle support. Learn about famous Otago red stags, or if you know your history, visit some of the many valley’s, campsites, and famous locations you’ve read about.
This is primarily a photographic safari. Some hunting can be added to this package, ask about this.
