NZ Wilderness Hunting Safaris

Species Available: Tahr - Chamois - Whitetail - Fiordland wapiti

The New Zealand wilderness is a place of unrivalled beauty and grandeur. Crystal clear rivers flow through bushclad valleys which rise up to exposed rock faces and snow covered tops. Red deer, fallow deer, whitetail deer, wapiti, tahr and chamois are found in the South island's wilderness.

Currently there is no game management on public land (wilderness country), some species are in low numbers or have poor trophy quality due to this fact. Tahr and chamois live in moderate numbers, with good trophy quality. Tahr and chamois are found in close proximity to each other, a tahr and chamois combo hunt is our most popular wilderness hunting option. Whitetail and Fiordland Wapiti are in low numbers with good trophies being hard to find. Red deer and fallow deer are best hunted in private property.

Our wilderness hunts are for free range hunters who want that raw kiwi experience, this is not just a hunt its an expedition. This is as kiwi as it gets and very similar to the way most local kiwi hunters hunt.

We fly in and out of the hunting area with our provisions by helicopter. The flight in is an awesome and spectacular way to begin your hunt as we track through different valleys and high mounatin passes into the Southern Alps, you may even get your first glimpse of an animal. On our wilderness hunts there are no roads, tracks or any signs of civilisation, just pure unspoilt wilderness. Generally the helicopter will land us right at our campsite. Walk in options are available in spring, September - December but only for the very fit.

We hunt out of a basic tented camp. Tents are alpine quality, with air mattresses and warm sleeping bags. A cooking and sitting area is erected by means of a tarpaulin or fly. In some areas it is possible to light a fire for warmth, alternatively a gas heater is provided. Usually we can spot animals from the campsite. Camps are as comfotable as possible with the weight restrictions we have.

Wilderness hunting is the most challenging form of hunting we offer. As far as the hunt and experience goes this is the pinnacle of what new Zealand hunting has to offer, a true test of the hunter amongst the elements. Animal numbers are good in most areas. Generally we are not affected by other hunting parties, but this is a possiblity as no one in New Zealand has an exclusive hunting concession over public land.

Terrain is steep and mountainous, we are generally hunting the alpine scrub edge and the open tops, although depending on the time of year we may be camped lower down hunting a main valley and side creeks. There are animal pads or tracks to help us get around, but footing is often uneven, there are not too many areas where we can just stroll along often climbing on all fours is needed.

A moderate to good level of fitness is required. We can adjust the hunt to some degree to suit your fitness as some areas are steeper than others, good balance and an understanding of what you are physically capable of is a big help. We will soon discern your fitness level and make sure we do not over step your personal boundaries. If you have doubts about your fitness a private land hunt may be a better option.

Chris has grown up hunting the New Zealand wilderness, he has an expert knowledge of where to find animals and how to hunt them. Wilderness hunts are available for the free-range hunter who wants a true blue kiwi hunting experience. Sometimes weather conditions and big country make for tough hunting, but when you do take an animal you have earned that trophy and you will remember for the rest of your hunting days the hunt that went with it.
