NZ Estate hunting safaris

Species available: Red stag - tahr - chamois - fallow - whitetail - wapiti - Awapara ram - Pitt island ram - goat

We have access to a number of different game estates ranging in size from 3000 - 40,000 acres. The main estate we hunt is 40,000 acres in size, which is obviously a very large tract of land and is only 10mins from our base at Lake Hawea. Some of our hard core free-range hunters have visited and hunted this estate and said to me this is a free-range area and you must market this area as free-range. But no not good old Chris McCarthy, he's too honest !!! In my eyes although this area is not fully enclosed it would be difficuilt for animals to move in or out due to natural boundaries so they are not 100% free-ranging animals.

Estate hunts offer exceptional trophies for deer species and easier terrain to hunt tahr and chamois. Animals are enclosed within an area by natural boundaries or high fence.

Access is by vehicle, once at the estate 4x4 vehicles or polaris vehicles are used to gain altitude. The estates are tracked in some areas, but remember New Zealand is a mountainous country and some country within the estates is very steep and difficuilt to access.

Lodge accommodation with home cooked meals is provided. Generally we'll hunt from our base at Lake Hawea as we have access to red stag, fallow, tahr, chamois, ram and goat all within 45 minutes drive. Alternatively we may stay at a lodge on an estate further afield.

Estate hunting offers the chance to see multiple species of game on the same estate it also offers the opportunity to hunt some of the biggest red deer in the world which New Zealand is famous for. Big trophies for fallow, wapiti or elk and whitetail are also found in the estates. Whether you're after that stag which is just a step up from what can be taken free-range or a stag that is truly something special we can make it happen.

Most areas have some vehicle tracks so its possible to drive up high and hunt down on animals rather than walking up from the bottom. Views are spectacular, picture post card. terrain varies from rolling tussock country to steep sided valleys and rock faces. The estate we hunt most often rises from 300m to 1900m above sea level, its still big boy's country. Climbing a steep face in slippery conditions a client turned to me recently and said "Chris this is very extreme hunting".

A good level of fitness is best, but with the range of estates we have access to we can suit an estate hunt to all fitness levels.

The deer species are in hard antler from late February until the end of August, tahr and chamois being horned animals can be hunted all year round. Best and most exciting time to hunt is when the deer species are mating or rutting and are really active and vocal being March - April - May.
